As mentioned previously, there are two measurement standards for determining the performance of a dehumidifier: AHAM and saturation.

AHAM vs Saturation

Humidity, of course, is a relative measurement of moisture in the air, and it changes according to air temperature. When you’re choosing the dehumidifier that’s right for your applications, you’ll want to factor in both the relative humidity (which can be measured using a digital hygrometer) and the temperature of the environment in which the unit will be operating.

Humidity Level

While choosing a dehumidifier, you’ll also want to have a target in mind when it comes to your desired humidity level. If you’re targeting your basement for dehumidifier placement, for example, your saturation level might be 65% or even higher. As indicated above, mold growth can be halted by reducing the humidity of the air to below the 50% mark.

Room Size

  • Warm air vs. cool air exhaust: Warm air dehumidifiers sometimes prove more popular, as they run a bit quieter than their cool mist counterparts. The drawback is that they require cleaning more often.
  • Option for drainage hose: Depending on where your unit will be placed, you may wish to attach a drainage hose instead of relying on the dehumidifier’s collection receptacle. This is a useful feature if you don’t want to empty your dehumidifier every couple of hours.
  • Receptacle size: Along the same lines as the drainage hose option, purchasing a dehumidifier with a larger collection receptacle can make your life quite a bit easier. If you opt to use the built-in collection container, rather than a drainage hose, you have the option of reusing the water for other purposes, such as watering plants.
