Commercial Dehumidifiers For Sale

In buildings and factories, commercial dehumidifiers are an essential part of operational systems. As humidity fills the ambient air with particles of water, an industrial dehumidifier serves the purpose of extracting this airborne moisture and preventing condensation.

For businesses, commercial dehumidification units save tremendous amounts of money that would otherwise need to be allocated for machine repairs, furniture replacement and interior maintenance. The benefits of this unit has also been used to great effect by relief workers, who employ the machinery in areas saturated by flooding and other natural disasters.

AHAM and Saturation: Terminology for Commercial Dehumidifiers

When a commercial dehumidifier bears the AHAM certification mark, it means that the machine has been independently tested and verified for its ability — as claimed by the manufacturer — for energy consumption and water removal capacity (rated in the removal of pints per day).

AHAM stands for the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers. It’s a trade association that represents manufacturers and suppliers within the home appliance sector throughout North America.

There are two measurements of capacity for most industrial dehumidifiers:

  • Capacity at AHAM — Dehumidification at normal levels: 60% relative humidity, 80° F
  • Capacity at Saturation — Dehumidification at extreme levels: 90% relative humidity, 90° F

The Three Main Types of Commercial Dehumidifiers for Sale

Commercial dehumidifiers generally fall into three principal categories: Conventional, Compact and Low Grain Refrigerant (LGR) units.

Conventional Dehumidifiers

The conventional model is an ideal commercial dehumidifier for disaster relief efforts and restoration work. With their relative lightweight and compact design, conventional dehumidifiers are easy to transport to ravaged areas. Refrigerants extract water from the air by condensing airborne moisture over coils.

Conventional Dehumidifiers from Aer Industries Industrial Dehumidifiers

Available in a variety of colors, conventional refrigerant dehumidifiers are usually equipped with recessed wheels and handlebars for convenient towing and carting from one area to another. In the most optimal of conditions — temperatures in the 70° F to 90° F range — refrigerants bring humidity levels down to an ideal level of roughly 40% RH, or 55 GPP.

Compact Commercial Dehumidifiers

When it comes to removing water in disaster scenes, compact commercial dehumidifiers are among the most convenient restoration models due to their lightweight design and portability features. In terms of airborne water extraction, industrial dehumidifiers are much preferable to chemical-based, anti-moisture methods. One of the recommended compact dehumidifying machines on the market is the BlueDri® BD-LGR75C.

In areas where damage has been extensive due to flooding or broken pipelines, damaged structures will only return to their previous state if dehumidification levels surpass the rate of natural evaporation. With a compact industrial dehumidifier, restoration can be achieved quickly and effectively to the walls, floors, ceilings, machinery and furnishings of a water-ravaged building.

LGR Dehumidifiers

Commercial dehumidification units of the LGR variety are also popular among workers and crews in the water restoration industry. In scenarios where flooding has occurred, LGR dehumidifiers are among the most optimal industrial dehumidifiers, with an ability to remove water below 55 GPP.

Regardless of the demands of a water restoration job, LGR units are built for the challenge. In places where water damage is intense, a B-Air® or BlueDri® commercial dehumidifier will remove vast quantities of airborne moisture and restore most structures to their pre-saturated state.

Commercial Dehumidifiers for Greenhouse

Cultivating plants in a greenhouse can be a tricky business. Most plants require distinct amounts of sunshine, carefully regulated temperatures and the ideal amount of moisture content in the air. Some of these factors are easier to control than others.

Because the moisture balance in greenhouses is so important for the promotion of plant growth, your best bet for regulating this factor is a commercial dehumidifier. Excess moisture can cause plant development to become stunted, and might even promote the growth of mold, mildew or fungi. Make sure you’re growing just the plants you want and nothing else!

Commercial Dehumidifier Usage in Greenhouse

Before investing in commercial dehumidifiers for your greenhouse, check the ideal growing conditions for each of your plants. Greenhouse dehumidifiers are a good fit for plants that require low humidity, but other plants might thrive in a moister environment.

Using Industrial Dehumidifiers for Mold Removal

Not every source of household mold can be reduced or eliminated with the use of an industrial dehumidifier. Some conditions, such as air conditioning condensation, improper plumbing construction or even roof and foundation leaks, are complex problems that should be addressed in a direct and timely manner.

Commercial dehumidifiers also don’t address standing water or carpets that are already saturated.

Mold Humidity Chart
Nevertheless, industrial dehumidifiers can be powerful tools for addressing the conditions that lead to some of the above situations — most particularly the growth of mold that’s caused by airborne moisture content.

If you suspect you have such an environment, you can purchase an inexpensive digital hygrometer at any home improvement store. Persistent allergic reactions can also be a sign that your living space is conducive to mold growth.

By introducing a commercial dehumidifier into your moist basement or other living space, you can curb the growth of additional mold. With the use of this unit, you can reduce the humidity to a level of 50%, which is sufficient for halting the growth of mold. A further reduction to 35% is even better.

How to Choose the Best Commercial Dehumidifier for Your Needs

There are almost as many commercial dehumidifier applications as there are dehumidifier manufacturers. As such, you want to pay close attention to a number of factors as you determine which unit is right for your needs:

AHAM and Saturation

As mentioned previously, there are two measurement standards for determining the performance of a commercial dehumidifier: AHAM and saturation.

AHAM vs Saturation

Humidity, of course, is a relative measurement of moisture in the air, and it changes according to air temperature.

When you’re choosing the industrial dehumidifier that’s the best for your applications, you’ll want to factor in both the relative humidity (which can be measured using a digital hygrometer) and the temperature of the environment in which the unit will be operating.

Commercial Dehumidifier Humidity Level

While choosing a commercial dehumidifier, you’ll also want to have a target in mind when it comes to your desired humidity level. If you’re targeting your basement for industrial dehumidifier placement, for example, your saturation level might be 65% or even higher. As indicated above, mold growth can be halted by reducing the humidity of the air to below the 50% mark (read about basement humidity here).

Room Size

Keep in mind the size of the space you’re working with. For very small rooms, overpowered dehumidifiers can cause more problems than they remedy, as the units exhaust hot air, and therefore have the potential to create troublesome condensation in windowpanes. An Industrial dehumidifier should be sufficient for moderately damp, 500-square-foot rooms. For extremely wet, 2,000-square-foot rooms, a 37-pint unit is recommended. Your needs are likely somewhere in between.

Also bear in mind that not every commercial dehumidifier has the same features, and doesn’t necessarily operate in the same way. Here are a few features to watch for:

  • Warm air vs cool air exhaust: Warm air heavy-duty dehumidifiers sometimes prove more popular, as they run a bit quieter than their cool mist counterparts. The drawback is that they require cleaning more often.
  • Option for drainage hose: Depending on where your unit will be placed, you may wish to attach a drainage hose instead of relying on the unit’s collection receptacle. This is a useful feature if you don’t want to empty your industrial dehumidifier every couple of hours.
  • Receptacle size: Along the same lines as the drainage hose option, purchasing an industrial dehumidifier with a larger collection receptacle can make your life quite a bit easier. If you opt to use the built-in collection container, rather than a drainage hose, you have the option of reusing the water for other purposes, such as watering plants.

If you keep the above factors in mind as you shop, you should be able to find a reliable commercial dehumidifier that meets your needs and will serve you well for years to come.

One last note: be sure to pay close attention to the duration and terms of each manufacturer’s warranty. A one-year warranty is a minimum you’ll want to consider.

The Need for Commercial Dehumidification Units in Buildings

There’s enough work involved in keeping a building clean without the added threat of condensation. This can cause issues in all kinds of structures, from schools and shopping malls to pressing plants and business buildings.

Problems Caused by Moisture Buildup
  • Mold: As water sits and ferments, mold growth takes places, the likes of which can lead to smelly odors and harmful bacteria. Industrial dehumidifiers prevent mold-forming condensation and are therefore vital to the health and habitability of commercial buildings.
  • HVAC malfunctions: Condensation can take its toll on a building’s heating and air conditioning system. As moisture buildup occurs inside the machinery, parts eventually get rusted, molded and worn.
  • Higher energy bills: As machines bear the brunt of moisture, they struggle just to operate at a basic capacity. Consequently, machines consume more energy as the effects of moisture linger. In only a short time, the upfront costs of a heavy-duty dehumidifier are recouped by the ongoing savings.
  • Spoiled furnishings: Similar to how flooding can leave fabrics irretrievably contaminated, moisture can take its toll on wood, carpeting and upholstery. With dehumidification systems in place, carpets and lobby furniture are spared from mold and odor.

For janitorial staff, the cumulative effects of moisture alone can account for hours of labor. Likewise, shop and building owners end up shouldering untold maintenance bills and replacement costs when machines fail and products deteriorate due to water damage and mold growth.

A professional commercial dehumidifier for basement, ground level and upper-floor operations can help building owners save a great deal of money in terms of maintenance and energy costs.
