When you’re on a water damage restoration job, you want to do the best job possible and in the most efficient way. Correct selection and placement of your equipment makes all the difference. Evaporation

In addition to selecting the right equipment and correct placement, remember evaporation is your goal and evaporation is influenced by several factors:

  • Relative humidity (level of moisture) in the air
  • Water vapor pressure differential between the surface of the wet material and the surrounding environment
  • Temperature of the wet material. Room should be heated for best performance. At 90 degrees, the moisture is converted into a vapor and pulled from the air.
  • Air movement across the surface of the wet material
  • Access to surface of wet materials

It’s important to have sufficient air flow and control the moisture in the air to deter microbial growth, which is why it’s critical to select the right equipment and place it properly.

How to Choose the Right Dehumidifier

It’s hard to do a good job with the wrong equipment. As a restoration specialist, two of your most important pieces of equipment are dehumidifiers and air movers. The size of the room and the saturation level need to be considered, as well as factors such as room temperature and humidity, when choosing a dehumidifier.

Keep these figures in mind to help you determine what you need:

  • 600 to 800 Square Foot Space — 75-99 pints per day (PPD) AHAM
  • 800 to 1,000 Square Foot Space — 57-99 PPD AHAM
  • 1,000 to 1,200 Square Foot Space — 100+ PPD AHAM

AHAM (Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers) is a standardized testing scenario for dehumidifier equipment on which measures for water storage are based. AHAM is at 60% relative humidity at 80 degrees.

How Many Air Movers Do You Need?

You will likely need more than one air mover at a job, but how many are needed for the best results? A general rule is for every one dehumidifier, you should use four to five air movers to circulate the air properly.

Keep in mind the surface area is more relevant to determining your air mover needs than the room perimeter in linear feet. You also don’t want to neglect closets or small storage areas that restrict airflow, as they will have drying needs as well. Plan to have one air mover for each of these areas, as well as any other small bathrooms or offset/inset of a room.

The flooring in the space where you’re working will also impact the number of air movers you need. Here are some guidelines:

  • Non-porous and semi-porous flooring: At least one air mover per 400 to 500 square feet.
  • Direct-glue carpet installations: At least one air mover per 300 square feet of carpet area.
  • Stretch-in carpet: At least one air mover per 300 square feet of carpet area.

You may have to use more than one type of air mover to properly complete a job.

Placing Your Equipment Correctly and Effectively

If you don’t place your equipment strategically, it will take longer to dry out the space, or it may not dry at all. The following general tips will help you determine how you should place your dehumidifiers and air movers.

Dehumidifiers:

  • Should be placed at the center of the room
  • If the room is too large for just one unit, stagger the units so there is an equal amount of space between them and the distance from the walls
  • Never place dehumidifiers facing each other or they will be drying the same area

Air Movers:

  • Place them around the room, close to the walls
  • Be sure to have at least six inches of space between the air mover and the wall or other structure to ensure proper airflow
  • Install one air mover for each 10 to 16 linear feet of wall with the outlet of each mover pointing in the same direction, so the lower part of the wall can be properly dried

Once you’ve made some progress and see some evaporation, you may have to adjust the placement of your equipment. The priority when you arrive on site is to control the moisture level and keep air moving, which is why initial equipment placement is important.
